In West Philadelphia born and raised... Has there ever been a TV opening credit song as iconic as the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's? We loved Will Smith in that show because even though he was suddenly thrust into living the posh life with his auntie and uncle in L.A.'s lap of luxury, he still kept his Philly realness. And what's more real than essentially telling someone straight to their face that they smell bad? That's exactly what Will Smith did immediately upon exiting the cab that took him to his new mansion in Bel-Air. This sweatshirt celebrates one of the most quoted lines from one of the most quoted songs in TV history.
An unsung and tragic footnote to this story is that the cab driver, a.k.a. Mr. Holmes, was completely shattered by Will's uncouth comment. Oh, the cabbie hid his pain from family and friends behind a false smile, but eventually it became too much to bear. How could he go on being the guy who was famous solely for having his stench pointed out to the world in the most public of ways by rising star, Will Smith? To ease the spiraling self-consciousness about his body odor, Holmes soon turned to a life of booze, drugs, and cheap women, and he gambled away all of his paychecks from the network. Eventually poor Holmes had to sell his cab, the one thing he owned in this world and the only thing he held dear, so that he could pay for an increasing need to medicate himself - anything and everything he could get his hands on to numb himself from the intense pain inflicted by Will's snide remark. Who new that one thoughtless comment uttered by a young, brash kid could throw a person's life into such turmoil and eventually lead to a man's undoing?
That said, it is a pretty funny line so we've commemorated it on this sweatshirt.
