Lew Blum, Philadelphia’s usually elusive towing kingpin, was photographed late Thursday night exiting his company’s West Philadelphia stockyard. A video from the incident shows Blum driving backwards down Lancaster Avenue, cursing and clanging. When this video circulated online, Redditors immediately identified Blum as Mater, the rusty tow truck from Pixar’s Cars movie franchise.
“This is yet another example our city’s Licenses & Inspections department sleeping on the job,” said rival tower George Smith. “The fact of the matter is that an anthropomorphized hillbilly tow truck cannot legally own a business — even a towing business.”
Other local towers are taking this revelation more personally. “It’s just hard realizing that your kids have been playing with a tiny version of your biggest competitor”, said Mike Murphy Sr., owner of Broad Street Towing. “The accent’s a shtick. Lew grew up in West Deptford. Tried to race pro but never took good care of himself, got pretty beaten down. Guess we all did, really.”
